Summer School Parent Letter: Students 8th-11th Grade

By Curriculum & Instruction Department | April 17, 2024
Summer School Parent Letter: Students 8th-11th Grade

Dear Parents of PTAA Students,

PTAA is committed to providing high-quality instruction and relevant learning for all students. Along with other classroom assessments and observations, STAAR/EOC exams provide teachers and parents valuable data regarding students’ academic proficiency, including information to meet the needs of our students who would benefit from additional academic support. House Bill 1416, passed in 2023 by state lawmakers, established requirements to create additional academic support through accelerated instruction for students who do not meet the passing standard on STAAR/EOC exams. Per state guidelines, students who do not meet the passing standard on the Spring 2024 STAAR/EOC exams are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of accelerated instruction in each subject area in which they are not successful. School districts are required to provide accelerated instruction in all subject areas with a maximum of two subjects. This accelerated instruction will be designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills important for academic success.

The accelerated instruction requirements in House Bill 1416 do not distinguish between students who do not test and students who do not pass. Eligible students who do not take the test will not have a passing score. Eligible students who do not have a passing score will be required to participate in accelerated instruction. Students are encouraged to be present on the days the STAAR/EOC exams are administered. Opportunities will be provided for students to make up the STAAR/EOC exams due to an absence.

Students who meet the requirements for accelerated instruction will have the opportunity to participate in summer learning sessions. Sessions will consist of learning for each of the following content areas: Algebra 1, English 1, English 2, Biology, and US History, students will only attend the content area session(s) for which they meet the requirements for accelerated instruction. To support families in planning for summer activities, the schedule for these STAAR/EOC learning sessions is provided below:

Location: Student’s PTAA campus, Timings: 9:00-12:00, Monday – Thursday Dates: June 3rd – 17th Subjects: Algebra 1, English 1, English 2, Biology, and US History

As a reminder, this letter is being sent to the parents of ALL students in grades 8-11 to provide you with information, and the possibility of your student needing accelerated instruction should they not perform satisfactorily on one or more exams.

Sincerely,

PTAA – Curriculum & Instruction Department
